Hack: Setup a Gmail filter so that all newsletters, daily deal alerts, and other automated emails get sent straight to trash. I treat my “Trash” as a folder and I check it when I have time and doesn’t disrupt my productivity during the day. Your emails in Trash stay good for 30 days.

Yeah totally! You can do this with any email. Just remember to test it so it doesn’t filter out important emails.
Why can’t you just unsubscribe?
You can unsubscribe and I suggest you do that for emails you don’t want.
This hack is for emails you want to get but are not urgent. For example I want to get emails about daily deals but I don’t want it to hit my inbox and disrupt my day.
